I picked this hutch bottom up for free from my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore. It was damaged, so needed a little TLC.
The door detail was what drew me to the piece.
I made my own chalk paint using latex paint and Plaster of Paris. Making your own chalk paint is simple and much cheaper than store bought. You simply create a slurry with the Plaster of Paris and water. Mix 1/2 cup of Plaster of Paris with a 1/2 cup of warm water until it dissolves completely. Once it is dissolved add 1 1/2 cups of latex paint to the mixture. Paint away!
When you are happy with the paint results finish the piece with paste finishing wax. I use Minwax brand, but any brand will do.
I splurged and spent $20 on legs at IKEA.
The top was made from one heat treated pallet. Using heat treated pallets is important. Non heat treated pallets are treated with chemicals, and not something you want in your house. Heat treated pallets will be branded with an HT on the pallet label.
I absolutely love the finished product! All for about $25!!
So fabulous!! I love the top, too!
